Early Chinle Navajo Weaving Indian Rug Blanket 49" x 75" Large
Early Chinle Navajo Weaving. Beautiful regional rug in the style of Chinle, named after the town of Chinle at the mouth of Canyon de Chelly. The typical characteristics of the Chinle rug are horizontal bands with patterns of Chevrons, stars, squash blossoms and diamonds with muted colors of gold, green, tan, ivory and pink. Unknown weaver. Circa early part of the 20th century.
This rug shows defining features of ...a true authentic Navajo rug, those being that the warp strings run vertically and make up the foundation of the rug. Navajo rugs are made on a continuous loom that contains the actual warp threads. Another is the rug has the short diagonal lines or diagonal breaks in the solid color area that are sometimes called lazy lines, lazy weave or the preferred term would be section lines. Another characteristic feature (in most rugs) is the presence of selvage lines that run along the sides of the rug. The line is actually two or more threads twisting around each other and interlaced through the edge of the fabric. Selvage lines help the weaver maintain a straight edge and give the rug a finished look. In most examples of Navajo rugs they don’t have fringe ends except in the case of older Germantown rugs when the fringe was added.
In good condition with normal age wear. Edges and corners need some repair.
