This was the final novel in Roth's acclaimed ZUCKERMAN TRILOGY, which started with THE GHOST WRITER (1979) and ZUCKERMAN UNBOUND (1981). After burying his father in the previous novel, Zuckerman is gripped by a mysterious disease which causes disruptiver pain that prevents him from writing. Bored, he lets his mind wander over key events from his past he wishes he could do over. He leaves his malaise behind by returning to his alma mater - the University of Chicago, to pursue a medical degree.
Per Harold Bloom in the New York Times Book Review, "(The Trilogy) merits something close to the highest level of esthetic praise for tragic comedy."
