Doctor Zhivago By Boris Pasternak : 1st Edition December 1958, Pantheon
Item History & Price
The novel takes place between the Russian Revolution of 1905 and World War II, telling of title character's love for two women, and the experiences concerning that.
The author, Pasternak, was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature by... the Swedish Academy in 1958, but was pressured to reject it by the Soviet government.
The book is considered one of the most significant of that time, despite Soviet newspapers calling it an "artistically squallid, malicious work replete with hatred of Socialism, " as well as a "malicious squab, a low-grade reactionary hackwork."
Pasternak was even "encouraged" to leave the country, for which he appealed publicly to Premier Khrushchev "Leaving the motherland will equal death for me."
This copy is in a brick-red cloth hardback, with gold lettering. There is a signature in the top right corner of the inside page, probably of the first owner, with the date 1958.
