Please notice this is just a quilt TOP: it is NOT a finished quilt or bedspread, as there is no batting or backing beneath the pieced fabrics shown in the photos.
We are not sure how old this vintage piece is: the fabrics used to make the appliques are not feed sacks, as far as we can tell, but we can't say if they are old fabrics from the 50's ~ 60's or from a more recent era.
Each block was made by a friend, who signed it by embroidering their names. The fabrics use...d are similar from block to block.
There are 36 blocks, all of them different. Besides well known applique patterns, like Sunbonnet Sue and others, the makers made a number of appliques that represent animals: a hen, an owl, a peacock, a turtle, a butterfly, a peace dove (?) (a bird carrying a branch), a cat, etc.
The appliques were sewn by hand to the off-white fabric (see close-up # 12).
We are not posting a close-up of the underside of this quilt top: it you are interested in seeing it, please contact us and we will send you a photo. The sewing of the blocks to the sashing strips and borders and connecting squares was done by machine.
It measures 95" square; the bed is a queen, 80" by 60".
