This bank is a 50's reproduction of a turn of the century mechanical bank titled Darktown Battery. It is more politically correct than the 19th century original that portrayed stereotype black players. This one is titled Hometown Battery. It is made of cast iron. The same process was used to make this Authentic Reproduction as the orig...inal was made. Molds were made from the original bank, hand cast in sand, then hand assembled, and painted. The original (1880's) cast iron American bank was patented and manufactured in 1888 by the J. & E. Stevens Company in Cromwell, Connecticut during the dawn of the game of baseball in America.
The term "battery" refers to the combination of a pitcher and a catcher.
To operate bank: with the pitcher's arm at rest; place a penny between the pitcher's thumb and palm while gently raising his arm backwards until it "snaps" into place;press down on the plunger next to the catcher on the top of the base; the penny will be "thrust" past the batter (to his surprise) and wind up in the catcher's mitt, ending up in the bank. While this is going on, the batter turns his head, and raises his bat, while the catcher moves his left hand and nods his head forward. The action is very fast and exciting. It would have to be considered one of the most desirable of all mechanical banks.
Dimensions: 9" long (at the base), x 2.5" wide, x 7" high.
Very good vintage condition!
