Original Description:
Offered is the Vintage CastIron Owl Bank you see Pictured.  The bankis approximately 7-1/2 inches tall and weighs 2 lb. – 5.4 oz.    It is fabricated of Iron Castings, w/twopieces comprising the head, two pieces comprising the body and a single pieceforming the bottom.  The two halves ofthe body and the head are each held together by a single machine screw.  I removed the body screw to expose the innerworkings.  If you look carefully, you cansee the... screw head that holds the two halves of the Owl’s head together.  The Cast Iron bottom is missing its hole plugas can be seen.  The bank is designed tofunction thusly:  Pressing down the smallLever on the back side of the Owl’s body actuates a Vertical Rod connected tothe Owl’s head causing the Rod and, thus, the Head, to rotate against a torsionspring.  Total rotation is about 90degrees and when rotated, the Owl looks over his left shoulder and the coinslot located at the base of the Owl’s Neck is exposed, allowing a coin to bedropped inside.  Upon releasing the Lever, the Torsion Spring returns the Owl’s Head to its normally forward lookingposition.  I say it’s “designed” tofunction this way as the linkage between the Lever and the Vertical Rod ismissing.  The arrangement is a simple onewhich I tried to show in the pictures and, I’d say the linkage, were itpresent, would consist of nothing more than an easily fabricated heavy wirewith a hook on each end to engage the Hole in the lever and in Vertical Rod.   Restore the linkage and it’ll word just fine.  The Owl has a good bit of its original paintwith some green and brown existing in sheltered areas but some cream coloredhouse paint has been accidently applied to its back w/some small paintspattering scattered about.  The Owl’soriginal eyes are long gone w/one being replaced with what appears to be abutton and the other missing entirely. Other than PATD. NO. 232628 cast into the Owl’s Base, I didn’t see anyother markings on the Owl, either inside or out.  I don’t know how old this bank is, but I knowit’s old as it was around my house when I was a little kid 50+ years ago and itwas old then. Another eBay seller offering the exact same Owl Bankhad this to say about it:   History about the bank:  The "Owl, Turns Head" bank wasmanufactured by J. & E. Stevens Co., Cromwell, Ct. and was based on patentNo. 232, 628 issued to James H. Bowen, Philadelphia, Pa. on Sept 28, 1880.  In the 1881 Ehrichs Fashion Quarterly it wasoffered for 85 cents. Buyer pays $13.40 shippingvia USPS Priority Mail.  I will combineshipping costs on multiple items.  Goodluck and Happy Bidding.
