From 1890, a RARE first edition, Abridged Caligraph Instructor, Or, How to Become Expert in Typewriting. By Mrs Arthur J. Barnes. Published by Arthur J. Barnes in St. Louis, Missouri. Sized10x8 inches, bound in blue cloth at the spine, original paper wraps. About 30 pages. Note the ad for The American Writing Machine Co. of Hartford, Connecticut, one of the earliest typewriter manufactures. One of their models was called the Caligraph, and their ad boasted the Greatest Speed, with 100,... 000 daily users. Their ad also offers ribbons, carbon paper, linen papers, Manuscript covers, and typewriter cabinets. Mark Twain, who lived in Hartford, experimented with early typewriters. Whether he owned a Caligraph or not, we can't say. An early typewriter item.
