This... is the original and scarce, Limited Edition, 1908 First Edition of Colonel Kellogg's first-hand account of his Civil War years while serving as an officer in Company I of the famous 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment which was part of the famous "Iron Brigade"during the Civil War.
Captain Kellogg participated in the Civil War battles of Gainesville, Second Bull Run, South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Rappahannock Station, Mine Run and Gettysburg.
In this book Kellogg relates how he was captured by the Confederates during the Battle of the Wilderness while the Iron Brigade was part of the Army of the Potomac on May 5, 1864 while he was doing skirmish duty on special detail.
He was imprisoned successively at Lynchburg and Danville, Virginia, Macon Georgia and Charleston, South Carolina.He then escaped on October 5th by jumping from a rapidly moving freight train while and his fellow Union prisoners were being transported to Columbia.
This book narrates his depressing experiences as a Prisoner of War in Confederate prisons and his further adventures while a fugitive after his escape from the train etc.
After he returned to the 6th Wisconsin he was promoted several times to the command of the Iron Brigade and led that famous Iron Brigade in the later Battles of Hatchers Run, Boydon Plank Road, Gravel Run, Five Forks, High Bridge and Appomattox.He was mustered out July 14, 1865.This book ONLY COVERS his experiences prior to being captured, his life as a POW, his escape and adventures eluding , capture.Great first-hand account of this famous officer and Commander of the Iron Brigade and 6th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment and part of his Civil War experiences etc.
The only illustration is an attractive black and white frontispiece photograph of John Azor Kellogg in his 6th Wisconsin Infantry Uniform.
Actual book size is 6 by 9 1/4 inches.Condition is near very good condition a nice, tight, complete and essentially clean book.Some fading and rubbing to the covers, some smudging and dustiness to same.Title lettering is still somewhat bright and attractive on cover.Back cover has similar wear with some fading and rubbing, some brown spotting to back cover upper right corner(on white area)several spots center back cover on gray board area.Light wear to cover board edges and some bumping to cover board corners.Some fading, rubbing and darkening etc.to spine, some whitish marks to spine, fading to gold embossed title lettering on spine but title still somewhat bright and attractive.Some wear to spine board tips with small splits to spine top and bottom.Front and rear inner hinges are tight and all interior pages are tight and intact.The interior pages are essentially clean with some browning to pages but all pages are still supple and not brittle.Some occasional smudging and some dustiness to pages.The frontispiece plate is essentially clean and attractive with some light smudging to borders.The left front endpaper has stamped on it in black and red ink "DISCARD MILWAUKEE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY"this is stamped twice in black and red ink.There are also some old glue remnants still affixed to this endpaper.There are no other markings like this in the book.The right front endpaper has about an inch piece out of the upper left corner.Some smudging, browning, dustiness etc.to front and rear endpapers as well.No dustjacket.The book is in quite collectible condition.
