Y., Feb. 16, 1928, Vol. 100, p. 277." Author's inscription to title-page, "Compliments of Isaac M Cline." Isaac Monroe Cline was born in 1861 in eastern Tennessee. After attending local Hiwassee College, Cline accepted an opportunity to join the fledgling U.S. Weather Service. His first post was at the weather station in Little Rock, Ark, where he also earned a medical degree in his spare time. In 1899 he became the head of the weather station in Galveston, Texas, which suffered the infamous hurricane of 1900. Although ridiculed for previously denying that Galveston could ever have a major storm, Cline was lauded for warning people and saving lives during the event that became known nationally as “Isaac’s Storm”. In 1901 he accepted a post in New Orleans as the regional weather chief, helping to predict many floods including the devastating one in 1927. Retiring in 1935 at the age of 75, Cline became an art dealer and owned a shop in New Orleans until his death in 1955. The Issac M. Cline Award, the National Weather Service's highest honor, is named due to his "numerous contributions to the mission of the Weather Bureau" and is "one of the most recognized employees in weather service history."
