In 1861 Virginia's western frontier was thrust into a conflict which most of t...he residents of the region did not want and in which they had little economic interest. Civil War came and the mountaineers of Buchanan and Wise counties responded and two companies enlisted very early in Wise County. These two companies readily accepted the orders of the Confederacy and fought where they were told. Most residents of these counties on the Kentucky border, however, joined units that had been promised service near home, such as the Pound Gap Battalion, or irregular organizations that were not likely to be sent far from home such as the Virginia State Line, Courts' Battalion, the 10th Kentucky Cavalry and the infamous 7th Battalion Confederate Cavalry. Several others joined Federal organizations raised across the border for Federal service, such as the 39th Kentucky Infantry. While fighting in Buchanan and Wise counties has been overlooked by most historians, these two counties saw significant, low-level fighting for most of the war. The counties also hosted large numbers of troops early in the war which nearly destroyed the local economy. Wise County was also the site of Pound Gap, the most natural southwest Virginia invasion route from the west. These troop concentrations and Pound Gap contributed to the raids and counter raids launched from or through Pound Gap. Much of the fighting here was of another type, low-level guerrilla warfare, which resulted in fighting at Gladeville (now Wise) on three different occasions, Pound Gap, Holly Creek, George's For, near Grundy, Cranesnest, and Alley's Creek...…...
