Early 19th century linen and wool work sampler by Anna Duffs aged 9 - 1808. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns all underlined with an arcaded floral border. The lower section is stitched with three rows of large alphabet letters followed by two rows of sets of family initials, some worked in black which often indicated those family members were deceas...ed. Anna's details are then stitched across the bottom edge - Anna Duffs Aged 9. Finis Year 1808.The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, quite dark and paler in the areas of missing stitch work. There are also a couple of small areas of dark staining. The colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Anna first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, there are small visible tack marks around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been tacked onto a stretcher or backing board at some point of time.
