Comments:On offer is the Fifth edition published by London John Murray 1869. 596 pages. Small octavo(140 x 190mm). Original blindstamped green cloth with gold gilt lettering and two gilt rules to the head and tail of the spine. Black coated endpapers. Illustrated with a folding chart on page 132. A list of corrections and additions for the fifth edition is included. 32 pages of adverts at rear dated September 1868. Only 2000 copies of the fifth edition wer...e printed. It is in this edition that Darwin used the expression "the survival of the fittest", Herbert Spencer's term, for the first time; it appears first in the heading of Chapter IV. Pictures are of item on offer.Condition: Overall good condition. Cloth has light marks/stains and rubbing. Gilt titles are still relatively bright. black end paper on front but missing black end paper at rear meaning rear board is detached from book. small mark on inside or rear board and facing adverts. Internally its clean with some light foxing. Several previous owners inscriptions on half title page and front free end paper. Small bookplate on inside front board.
