Slim pamphlet, measuring approx. 26.5cm x 17.5cm. Disbound, delicately held together with a couple of binding threads (leaves detaching). Pages edges are bumped and touch tatty in places. A blank has been crudely restuck to title page at inner edge (little tightly and with thin reinforced strip). This blank has contemporary? inscription to top. Chip to inner edge of one leaf. There are a couple of few small worm runs to margins in places (see photos). Outer page edges are little dusty/browned. Occasional spot, mark and crease, else the majority of contents remain in reasonably clean condition.

Scarce historically important Commonwealth pamphlet.The Humble Petition enshrined in Law Cromwell's position and powers as head of state, and included an oath of office.
There had been much debate in parliament as to whether to bestow Oliver Cromwell with the title of King. He objected to the word King, arguing his position was the same in power if not in name. After much discussion it was agreed that he would not be referred to as King.
Although after redrawing the Humble petition one its articles still retained an actual reference to both the title and the office of King. This was Article 15.
After objections of confusing the public, Article 15 was removed.
This is a contemporary printed version of the 'Humble Petition and Advice' with no Article 15."To His Highness the Lord Protector of the Commonwealth of England, Scotland, and Ireland, and the dominions and territories thereunto belonging: the humble additional and explanatory petition and advice, of the knights, citizens, and burgesses now assembled in the Parliament of this Common-vvealth", dated "the 26. day of Iune 1657." has separate dated title page; pagination and register are continuous.
