Evelyn Waugh - A Handful Of Dust (1934 6th Imp) SIGNED To Sitwell Family
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:17456119 | Publisher: Chapman & Hall |
Author: Evelyn Waugh | Fiction Subject: Classic Literature |
Binding: Hardback |
The book is firmly bound in the original "snakeskin" cloth. It is bumped to extremities; the spine is somewhat faded, with a 1.5" piece of damage to the base; the gilded titles still have a bit of shine. There is no jacket.
What makes this copy interesting is its inscription, on the front endpaper, "For Georgia & Sachi, from Evelyn". This presumably refers to Georgia & Sacheverell Sitwell (t...he latter being sister to the most famous literary Sitwell, Edith). Georgia (née Doble) was a personal friend and correspondent of Waugh; it has also been suggested that the Sitwell family seat, Renishaw Hall in Derbyshire (often visited by Waugh and wife "She-Evelyn") was, at least in part, an inspiration for Brideshead.
A fascinating piece of literary history. (Copies of Scoop and Brideshead Revisited in my other items).
