This is a special sale of a very old and rare book Alice in Wonderland, printed in 1866 and published in 1867, fifth-thousand, as statedon the title/copyright page, in London by Macmillan Publishers. One of the first 5000 Alice books ever printed bythe original publisher, with over 150 years of continual publication. Original red cloth binding with gilt stamping... on front of Alice, back cover gilt stamped with the Cheshire cat.Triple ruling of gilt on front and back covers and gilt stamping on spine. All three sideshave gilt page edges. No cocking or leaning. Internally the book is impressive with the originaldark teal endpapers and no cracking along the gutters. No previous owners name, bookplate or gift inscription. Frontispiece and tissue guard intact. Includes all forty-two fabulous illustrations by John Tenniel. Veryclean on the whole. Some very minor foxing on thefirst few pages and a few minor spots internally, some acceptable wear to cover even the spine ends are in very good condition. Overall aspectacular book, an amazing add to collection or an incredible gift forsomeone special. Very scarce, I don't see any others on the market at this time, especially in this condition and with the original binding. In collector's condition. All reasonable market rate offers considered. Looks better to the eye than the photo's. The others currently listed are not as old as this one (other than 1st edition 1st printings 1866), not in nearly as good condition and cost more.Alice in Wonderland is considered the first book publishedfor children about children, the forerunner for all other children's bookssince.
