“The Sun Also Rises” is the first major novel written by Ernest Hemingway. Published in 1926, the novel was recognized as a major modern piece of literature and established Hemingway’s status as a literary figure. “The Sun Also Rises” is about a group of American expatriates who live in Paris and travel to Pamplona, Spain to watch the bullfights. Based largely on Hemingway and his friends, deemed “The Lost Generation”, which included writers, artists, and poets, the novel is a reflection on the group and the specific relationships and dynamics within it. On the surface, the novel is the love story between protagonist Jake Barnes and Lady Brett Ashley, a divorcee and temptress. Within the course of the novel, though, Lady Brett manages to seduce a string of men, causing tensions to run high with bitter jealousy. It is a story of unrequited love, lust, envy, beauty, and seedy ugliness. One of Hemingway’s most important works, “The Sun Also Rises” is an American classic.
