Ralph Waldo Emerson THE COMPLETE Autograph Edition Manuscript Page Set
Item History & Price
Number 258 of 600 copies of the Autograph Centenary Edition of the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Volume 1 signed by the publisher and includes a single manuscript sheet of a page written in ink by Emerson, with his own corrections.
It's a very important passage, and one that would wind up in his essay "Poetry and Imagination" in the chapter marked Veracity (present in volume 8 of this set). The manuscript page reads:
What else ...is it to be a poet? What are his garland and singing-robes? What but a sensibility so keen that the scent of an elder-blow or the timber-yard and corporation-works of a nest of pismires is event enough for him --all emblems and personal appeals to him. His wreath and robe is to do what he likes; emancipation from other men's questions, and glad study of his own; escape from the gossip and routine of society, and the allowed right and practice of making better. He does not give his hand, but in sign of giving his heart; he is not affable with all, but silent, uncommitted or in love, as his heart leads him.
There are many corrections, words crossed out, additions, etc. which give the reader a view into Emerson's writing and editing process. The pages are marked 102 in purple ink and 119 in red pencil.
Hardcover, 8vos., original brown cloth, title labels. Each volume illustrated with tissue-covered photogravures. Published 1903-1904 by Houghton Mifflin and printed at the Riverside Press in Cambridge, MA.
Very Good to Near Fine. The only major area of damage is a dent to the spine label of volume 11. Contents bright, clean and unmarked, most top edges uncut, tight bindings, minor foxing to endpapers only (heavy browning to endpapers in volume 3 only (see photo). Light mottling and rubbing to some of the boards, minor bumping to the spine ends, spine cloth betrays only the faintest hint of fading.
Again, this set includes only 11 of the 12 volumes, however the manuscript page in the first volume is present, in its original state and filled with great content. An excellent chance to own an actual page of writing from one of America's best writers.
