Ano D. 1640Selling here is volume one from the second edition in folio of 'The Workes of Benjamin Jonson', printed in London, 1640. This volume with an interesting and early ink ownership mark at head of A3 recto, that of one Ed (?): Beaumont. Tempting to imagine that this could be a relative of the famous playwright.
Folio, bound in worn 18th century half calf over marbled paper covered boards, corner pieces lacking and upper board detached, spine with 5 gilt ruled raised bands and red morocco label. Plain endpapers period with the binding.The book measures 20cm by 29.5cm.The contents of the volume present are complete, meeting collation: [12], 668; 228pp, with the portrait frontispiece, engraved titlepage, decorative initials, head and tailpieces. Each of the The subsidiary plays with separately dated titlepage, "Epigrammes" begins new pagination and register.

Textblock is firm, and edges square: top edge between pp 170 - 345 with area of water damage, each leaf with worst-affected area cut away to varying extents, surrounding few inches stained and dustmarked, the effects of this heavier towards front and receeding thereafter, worst-affected leaves with loss into headings and four or five lines of text - see images. Majority of contents however in good, clean and crisp condition, some expected light toning and foxing consummate with age and use, some corner tears and creases, though nothing, on the whole, too disfiguring.
