This was the second time the Upstate New York village hosted the Games, after 1932. Mascot of the games was "Roni" the Raccoon. These games are known for the 'Mirac...le on Ice' when the USA Men's Hockey team beat the heavily favored Russian USSR squad 4-3 and finished the Gold Medal run by defeating Finland. Eric Heiden United States won gold in the 500m, 1000m, 1500m, 5000m, and 10, 000m speed skating events setting four Olympic records and one world record in the process.
