ROYCROFTINK FOUNTAIN PEN SIGNED ON ROYCROFT LETTERHEAD LETTER - ELBERT HUBBARD - 1914 PROVENANCE: THIS WAS ACQUIRED AS PART OF A LARGE LOT OF EPHEMERA RELATED TO ROYCROFT AND THE ROYCROFTERS ON EBAY A FEW MONTHS AGO - THE SIGNATURE IS NOT AUTHENTICATED, BUT IT LOOKS RIGHT FROM OTHERS I HAVE SEEN OF ELBERT HUBBARD AND IT IS ON OFFICIAL ROYCROFT LETERHEADCondition: Good, displays very well
ABOUT ROYCROFT AND ELBERT HUBBARD: If you are looking at this item, we assume y...ou know a fair amount about Roycroft already and its illustrious founder Elbert Hubbard. Hubbard was a self-made man who met William Morris in England after a successful career at the Larkin Soap company of Buffalo, N.Y. He came back from this trip with the arts and craft movement and introduced it to America. He founded a community of skilled artisans in East Aurora, N.Y. (a few miles from Buffalo and the Niagara Falls) where he produced beautiful books (Hubbard was an accomplished writer ...A Message to Garcia; An American Bible; and countless cleaver Mottos), metal ware made of copper and brass over copper (mainly), furniture and sweet confections (maple syrup, candy, etc.). You can still visit the East Aurora, N.Y. campus of Roycroft as many of the beautiful Arts and Craft buildings are still standing, such as the Roycroft Inn (I highly recommend a stay there if you love being surrounded by Arts and Craft furniture, art and ...the spirit of Elbert Hubbard himself!). Elbert Hubbard died in 1915 aboard the steamship Lusitania which was torpedoed by the German navy in the early part of WWI. He died a true hero with his wife, locking themselves in their cabin embracing and awaiting death by drowning together in order to make place in the rescue boats for other passengers.
