Father of the Rochester’s “Ramjet” Fuel Injection! Elliot M. “Pete” Estes was the first to investigatefuel injection at General Motors for the Oldsmobile 1949 Rocket V-8 engine. Fuel Injection was recognized by General Motors VicePresident of Styling Harley J. Earl as necessary for race car performance.Earl’s interest in fuel injection caused GM’s Executive Vice President HarlowH. Curtice to recognize fuel injection as a “Future Technology”. Curtice deemedfuel injection necessary for improving fuel economy, reducing exhaust emissionsand improving performance across all of GM’s passenger cars in the early1950’s. Harlow Curtice’s plan was to roll out fuel injectionacross Cadillac, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Chevrolet, starting with thepremium name plates. As events unfolded, GM’s high-volume value leader, theChevrolet Motor Division, would become GM’s first application of Rochester FuelInjection. Chevrolet’s engineers worked as a team with theirengineering counterparts at GM’s Engineering Staff in Warren, Michigan, DieselEquipment Division in Detroit, Michigan, Rochester Products Division inRochester, New York, AC Spark Plug in Flint, Michigan, Packard Electric inWarren, Ohio, and Delco-Remy in Anderson, Indiana; to bring “Ramjet”Fuel Injection to the U.S. automotive market place by late 1956.
