Original Description:
Contraryto everything you have been told and think you know, Harlow Curtice sent EdwardCole to Chevrolet Motor Division on May 1, 1952 with the mandate to engineerand build hundreds of thousands of rear-engine-transaxle cars with all-wheel independent suspensions… every year.EdCole brought Maurice Olley back to Detroit from GM Vauxhall in England asDirector of Chevrolet R&D to work with John Dolza at GM’s Engineering Staff;on GM’s top-secret Cadet II program. Ed Cole th...en hired renowned Europeanautomotive engineer Zora Arkus-Duntov with much theoretical and practicalexpertise including exotic racing cars to compliment and round-out his team.Zora commandeered Mauri Rose's 1953 Corvette Test Car EX-54 and converted it into the first running Cadet IIrear-engine test vehicle with an all-aluminum engine coupled to a transaxle andindependent rear suspension in early 1954. It was Zora's first non-front-engine Corvette and the 1962 Corvette was the first "Planned" rear-engine-biased production Corvette. Zoraand GM Styling’s William L. Mitchell began building future Corvettes withrearward-biased vehicles as Zora first called them with rear-engines, transaxles and independent suspensions starting in 1957.Zora then built his Chevrolet R&D “R”car in May 1959 with Bill Mitchell’s GM Styling providing the body. While notspecifically stated the “R” stood for either or both of its key elements;“Rear” as in engine and “Research” as in the very best. The second "Planned" rear-engine-biased production Corvette was planned for 1966 and so it went! Zora said in his own words after 1957 that's all I worked on and it was always "just around the corner".From1960 through 1975 Zora and Mitchell collaborated on more than three dozen experimental “Mid-ship”engine vehicles as Zora now referred to them; fully backed by Ed Cole, then Bunkie Knudsenand finally Pete Estes.By 1973 Zora and Bill Mitchel had perfected the first of several spectacular “Mid-ship”Corvettes with GM’s production approval. The only thing standing in its was JohnZ. DeLorean… so what went wrong?AfterZora’s mandatory retirement in 1975 and Mitchell’s in 1987 their shared dreamof a “Mid-ship” Corvette was never fully extinguished and its embers smolderedyet never reached full combustion. The author was part of the “Mid-ship”Corvette team’s development in 2008 when the bottom fell out of the globaleconomy.Thisbook finally uncovers the exciting and rich true Corvette “Mid-ship” historyand its trials and tribulations. The book debunks the myths and tells thelegends as they actually occurred… to celebrate the next “Mid-ship” Corvette!  12 Point Durable High-Gloss CoverHigh Quality #60 Gloss Paper764 Pages (with color where available)Over 147, 000 Words & Over 1, 440 Photos, Illustrations, Documents, etc.ISBN: 978-0-9998697-2-7 Retail List Price is $119.95.
