This listing is for a Marantz 2220B that has been fully restored. None of that garbage "partially Recapped here" this unit was completely Recapped and given numerous improvements. It works wonderfully now, however the AM tuner section does seem to not be working. I wouldn't consider that a huge deal as the AM tuner in these units is mediocre at best, one is much better served by a modern or dedicated vintage AM tuner with higher sensitivity and better shielding.It was rebu...ilt to last, all bulbs were replaced with new warm white LEDs, the original vellum paper was left as it gives a closer appearance to what the original incandescent bulbs look like.This unit should easily last it's next user. I restored it as if I was going to use it myself. Some of the improvements include:
Better transistors, removal and replacement of all failure prone parts, PSU upgrades, larger main filter capacitors and bypass capacitors, flyback diodes for protection and just numerous other improvements throughout the unit.The faceplate was also given a very thorough cleaning. It shines like it was brand new now. However, please see the pictures for condition. The knobs do have some scratches and knicks from use, and some of the faceplate lettering and markings have faded. The inside of this unit was cleaned the best I could, however some dust does still remain. But once again, see pictures for the best representation of the item.Now onto the details:
This unit was rebuilt to last, I have replaced over 50 capacitors, 12 transistors and made a number of improvements.
The main filter capacitors were upgraded to 10000uf Nichicon LKG capacitors, the upgraded capacitance allows for better Handling of sustained bass. I also added two WIMA films as bypass capacitors to help filter any high frequency noise.The Power Supply was completely rebuilt, it was given new 105C rated Nichicon UPW capacitors in sections that heat up. One UFG was thrown in due to part availability. The PSU also got new MUR1620CTG and CTRG ultrafast dual diodes, as well as a Uf4004 diode. The main power regulation transistor and the 14v supply was upgraded to an MJE15030, which has well over 4x the voltage and current capability of the original. The original transistors used there is known to wear out and drift due to heat.The preamplifier board, which is the most crucial to the "Marantz sound" was upgraded and Recapped as well. The main filter here was upgraded to a larger capacitance (to offer better filtering) 105C rated Nichicon UPW, the rest of the Capacitors were upgraded to WIMA films to ensure the best sound quality and reliability. Using Film capacitors ensures that the circuit will remain within specifications for the foreseeable future (whereas even new electrolytic ones dry out). The transistors here were also replaced and matched. I used modern Fairchild low noise transistors here as it helps with the noise floor of the amplifier.The main amplifier board was given all new capacitors, a few bipolar capacitors in places where they are applicable. All failure prone VD1212 diodes were replaced with 2x 1N4148s to ensure reliability. The differential pair of transistors were replaced with hfe matched Fairchild parts. This ensures minimal DC offset and drifting under use. The audio circuit also got some Nichicon MUSE UKZ capacitors. I also swapped out the failure prone relay driver transistor with a new Fairchild part to ensure reliability. The relay works just fine and was not replaced. I also swapped a few other transistors in the signal path to low noise modern parts to ensure reliability. I also added flyback diodes to prevent the amplifier from blowing output transistors or other components on power off. The phono preamp was given new capacitors and transistors as well. The main filter was upgraded in capacitance and replaced with a Nichicon UPW capacitor. The decoupling capacitors were upgraded to nichicon UKZs. I used bipolar capacitors for the ones in the audio circuit, there I used 2 Nichicon UES capacitors and 2 WIMA films. The transistors were also upgraded to low noise modern equivalents as the phono preamp is exceptionally sensitive.The tuner and MPX filter boards were both given brand new capacitors as well. The FM works amazing on this unit following the recap. I even went and Recapped the Dolby FM board, even though there hasn't been a Dolby FM broadcast for at least 25 years now. It was Recapped as a matter of completion. While a dedicated tuner generally works better this units FM tuner gets the job done nicely.
Unfortunately I was unable to get the AM tuner to work. It just gives pops that are louder than the station tuned.I do warranty my work, however I will not accept returns due to the tuner in this amplifier. If anything I worked on does wind up failing within 6 months time please don't hesitate to contact me. I do not expect anything to go wrong with this unit as I have restored it to it's original glory using parts that should easily last 40+ years.After servicing this unit sounds absolutely amazing.As for shipping, I am experienced with shipping amplifiers, I always use a new box and enough bubble wrap to ensure that the amplifier cannot be damaged.
