JOHNSON’S ISLAND PRISON
PART I: THE PRISON: “HELL HAS TORMENTS OF COLD”
When the North realized that eastern forts would not suffice for keeping prisoners in a long war, other facilities, such as Johnson’s Island on Lake Erie, were hastily constructed. One prisoner wrote that in winter he was convinced that “hell has torments of cold.” Others compared it to St. Helena and the Black Hole of Calcutta. In summer, however, the isle was cooled by pleasant like breezes and was an endurable place – until 1864 when prisoners, to supplement their reduced rations, resorted to stalking and stewing rats.
PART II: THE CONSPIRACY – PIRATES ON LAKE ERIE
Mission Impossible – the missions accepted by daring Confederate agents operating from Canada involved an intricate plot. They planned to seize merchant vessels on Lake Erie, steam into Sandusky Bay at night and commandeer a heavily armed Federal warship, blast down the stockade and liberate Confederate prisoners of war, including many high-ranking, battle-tested officers. This adventure tale of piracy, swashbuklers, mutiny and the hanging noose has never been fully told until now….
