Antique Arts & Crafts Handmade Copper Tankard - Good Morning Rooster - C. 1900
Item History & Price
~Welcome to my auction for this unusual early 20th century hand crafted tankard~
This is a really nice piece of hand worked copper, made in the arts & crafts style and dating from the early years of the 20th century. The piece is almost certainly a one off and has been a labour of love for someone to make.
There are no makers marks or labels on the item so it's impossible to say who made the piec...e - my feeling is that it's probably a night-school piece by an enthusiastic amateur rather than being produced by a professional copper worker from one of well known arts & crafts guilds. Many guilds up and down the U.K. operated schools and apprenticeships for enthusiasts wishing to further their hobby or pave a way to a new career.
The construction of the item is relatively simple, being of conical form with a simple strap handle to one side - the seam is present behind the handle. The design around the mug is that of two roosters or hens, one of which is pecking the ground.Beneath them is the phrase 'Good Morning'.The birds have been hammered into the copper in the repousee manner (being hammered from the reverse side) which gives them a raised and three dimensional look - further detail for the feathers has been chased into the copper from the front side. The tankard has been finished off with a rolled over lip to the top.
As can be seen in the images, the copper has not been cleaned for some time and is toning down nicely towards a chocolate brown colour, which is favoured by many collectors.
The item measures 10cm wide across the base and is also 10cm high - the total unpacked weight is 206.3g.
The condition of the item is generally very and it is in solid condition with no splits or holes. The handle is very slightly out of shape (see pictures 2, 3 and 4).Given the nature of how it was made there are tool marks to the copper in the background field, but this is absolutely normal. The mug has been well loved for over 100 years and in that respect some of the detail to the high points has softened somewhat from cleaning - you may also notice that you can see ingrained old polish within the grooves of the chasing, something that is commonly seen on these types of pieces. All in all it's a really nice piece to add to collection - it displays really well and would actually look nice with some dried flowers in it.
Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
