Antique Arts & Crafts Handmade Hammered Copper Trinket Box - C. 1900 - 1920
Item History & Price
~Welcome to my auction for this good quality hand worked early 20th century copper box~
This is a really nice and most certainly usable handmade copper box dating from the first quarter of the 20th century.I acquired the item through the antiques trade and my source bought it from a house in Cornwall.
Looking at the distinctive design on the lid, there are definite Celtic style motifs apparent - the ...swirls formed in copper wire are seen in ancient Cornish architecture, and in turn were later seen on Cornish copper art copper ware (most notably by Francis Cargeeg in the late 1930's and 40's).
The whole box has been hand formed - the main body of the box has an all over planished or hammered finish with a simple wire work rim to the lip and base.The lid is also hammered to form a low dome shape - there a simple little lip applied to the underside of the lid which ensures the lid pushes on to the base well.The really nice part of the box is the applied wire work decoration to the lid, which as mentioned above is quite reminiscent of traditional Cornish Celtic motifs.
The box sits on 4 round copper ring feet, which have been neatly soldered to the base.
There are no identifying marks whatsoever on this item, so it's impossible to say who made it - it's my opinion that this is not the work of an amateur, perhaps a student or night-school attendee as the item is a little too well made.I sure that a professional craftsman or coppersmith has made this piece, probably in the first quarter of the 20th century.
The item is generous in size, so it would make a nice trinket box or similar - the item measures;
Width across lid - 12.5cmWidth across base - 11.7cmHeight - approximately 8cmTotal unpacked weight - 480.4g.
The item is in all round excellent condition with no major faults to report - the box has a good shape and is free from nasty dents and scratches.The item has been polished over time and this has slightly softened the copper wire decoration to the lid, but certainly not to its detriment.The inside has darkened over time and there are traces of old polish inside.Naturally, given its age, there are perfectly normal light contact marks here and there from normal use, but again these are not to its detriment.Altogether it's a very nice collectable and usable piece!
Please study the images provided to satisfy yourself as to the condition of the item - if you have any further questions please ask and I'll be happy to oblige.
