Organized August 18, 1862, under Colonel William Given, it moved into Kentucky in September and into Tennessee in December, where it remained in service guarding railroads until September, 1864, when a portion of the Regiment went to the relief of Athens. The fort was cowardly surrendered to the enemy when an overwhelming force captured and destroyed many members of the 102d. The officers and men were... taken to Selma and Cahawba, Alabama, and when paroled took passage on the ill fated steamer Sultana. Eighty-one men of the Regiment were lost by the disaster of that boat. In October, 1864, the Regiment was employed in harrassing Hood on his march north, and did efficient service until June 30, 1865, when it was mustered out.
