Very rare and very beautiful, ca1890’s Native American Woodlands / Iroquois Indian Bead Decorated, Fringed Hide Jacket. This outstanding turn of the 20th century Plains Cree Jacket measures approx. 36 1/2" long overall, 19 1/2" across the shoulders (from shoulder seam to shoulder seam), 26 1/2” from shoulder seam to cuff and 36” at the chest. The decoration is beautiful - all hand spot stitched and the Jacket features extensive rawhide fringe to the top line of the arms, around t...he shoulder seams, at the lower edge down the center of the back and to the borders of the beaded panels (see the scans below).
This wonderful Iroquois Hide Jacket is thread sewn with spot stitched beadwork in elaborate, floral designs using chalk white, red white-heart, medium blue, cobalt blue, turquoise, translucent yellow, translucent amber and pink colored beads. The decoration is applied on the collar, cuffs and on two panels on the front on each side of the closure. The Jacket retains all three of its original, 19th century bone buttons and is lined with its original, brown cotton / muslin trade cloth.
We would estimate that the Jacket would fit some who wears a Men’s Medium size although it is rather long in the arms - likely originally made for a rather tall, slender male.

This very rare and wonderful, ca1890’s Woodlands / Iroquois Bead Decorated Hide Jacket is in very good condition. All of the hide elements are supple and sound with some soiling as can be seen in the scans below. There have been three rather significant, “make do” repairs to the Jacket – one at the left shoulder and one at each of the armpits. The repairs are rather unobtrusive when the Jacket is worn. There is also some repairs at the cuffs but these are on the inner surface. The beadwork is exceptionally well preserved with no loss or damage. The rawhide fringe is also very well preserved.
