An incredibly rare find. These are in overall excellent condition for an antique set. Each pastel is labelled and stamped with a number from 1 to 526. I have counted and make it roughly 410 pastels that are whole or nearly whole left in this set. Some look almost as new and barely used whilst others are partially used. Most are in one piece b...ut some do have breaks. The majority are whole and seem firm and hold together when handled and do not crumble. There's also some smaller pieces that I did not count. Please see the photos and count for yourself.
The pastels come in four wooden trays layered in their original box. I've included a photo of each layer. The wooden trays have dove tail joints on the corners and ribbon handles for lifting each tray out. One tray looks slightly warped. The box has wear and some small bits of damage commensurate with age. The lid is hinged with wire and the original label is under the lid. There's also what I assume to be the original price of 6 pounds and 6 shillings (6 guineas) written in pencil on the front of the box. I've calculated that this translates to over £2000 in today's money, meaning these pastels could have only been afforded by the top professional artists of their time. Modern equivalents seem to cost around £4 per pastel.
I'm dating these pastels to the early 1900s. Looking online I can see that the artist supplier C. Barbe formed in 1827, becoming Lechertier Barbe in 1848 and then Lechertier Barbe Ltd. in 1898. The absence of any phone number on the label suggests that this set predates telephone numbers. It's believed they were made in France to be imported and sold in England.
These pastels might appeal to an artist who intends to use them, as I understand that some prefer the older pastels. But as it's so rare to find such a large set in this condition the winning bidder may want to keep these pastels preserved exactly as they are, as I would think this could be one of a few surviving examples like this and I could even see them going into a museum. They are being sold as an antique collectable.
The wooden box measures approx. 46.5cm (W) x 25cm (D) x 11cm (H). The pastels are approx. 6.5cm (2.5 inches) long, unless they have been used. Please study all of the photos as these form part of the description.
They will be very well packed and sent by a tracked courier service. For overseas bidders I use eBay global shipping programme.
