Antique 1700's Wrought Iron & Wood Courting Spiral Candle Holder Candlestick #7
Here is an original antique Courting candle holderIn the 17th and 18th centuries, courting candles were used by fathers to set a time boundary for their daughters - when a suitor would come to court her, the father would set the candle to a certain height, with that being the time allowed for them to be alone and converse. It was an interesting social and family phenomenon, as it showed, in a sen...se, how much trust the father had for the suitor, as well as set a boundary for their daughters and reminded them of their family obligation. It was a subtle reminder that their time for courtship was limited, and when the candle would run out, the suitor would be asked to leaveSpiraled hand hammered wrought iron column, simple push-up mechanismHandled up topTurned wooden base, attached as shown on underside
