Late 19th century sampler by Margaret A Allcroft aged 11 - 1882? I've put a question mark after the date as Margaret has forgotten to include a number and has stitched 182. The sampler definitely isn't early 19th century so I am guessing the date is 1882, but it may be 1872. But either way this sampler, worked in wool on even weave gauze, is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with three rows of alphabet letters, numbers and ...border patterns with a diamond border pattern at the end of the numbers. The middle section is stitched at the centre with the following biblical quotation which has a rose bush on either side with a flower by that on the left side

The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central carnation with a bird and fruit basket to its left and right, a dog above each bird. Margaret's details and the date of 182 are stitched beneath then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with the odd small, faint stain. The colours of the wool are good with some shades not quite as vibrant as when this piece was originally made. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Margaret first stitched it. Measures 16" x 12 1/2"
