1873 Elgin National Watch Company 15 Jewels Grade 61 (transition model) H.Z. Culver Adjusted Quick Train Size 18s Key & Hand wind and Hand set Pocket Watch. Very early serial number 236, 591. Leader Coin Silver Case. Strong runner!A dial is signed Elgin National Watch Co. Leader Coin Silver Case serial number 295, 563 in good condition. Both covers close well and open 90 degrees as expected. The movement almost pristine for a watch of 146 years old! An original Thick Glass Crystal ...with some scratches came with years being in use. Very unique transition movement both Key and Hand winds and Hand sets (To set time with crown first pull and hold a small lever located at 5:00 o'clock, shown on image 6). A key # 4 and a chain are included. Runs strong, keeps pretty good time, but was not timed for accuracy, so assume some service may be needed. It is unique transition piece Grade 61, very rear shows up on the market, unique adder for any watch collection.Elgin National Watch Company was founded in 1864, right as the civil war was coming to an end. The first watch Elgin was finished in April of 1867 (It was B.W. Raymond # 101, the same model you can buy in this listing) and over the next 100 years, they went on to produce about 60 million mechanical watches. It was the largest watch factory in the world. Howard Z. Culver was one of the original investors of the ElginNational Watch Company. Leader Coin Silver Case was manufactured by Keystone Watch Case Company located in Philadelphia, Riverside and New Jersey.Elgin was originally called the "National Watch Company". The name never really stuck and in 1874, they changed their name to the "Elgin National Watch Company" because most of the watch trade and public were calling them "watches from Elgin". They kept that name until the late 1960s when they stopped producing watches.
