OBJECT// Antique Tibetan incredibly rare and genuine museum quality 16th century statue of a portrait Lama seated on a teaching rug, his features are refined and considered, his hand in a spiritual pose, the robes capture a slight sense of movement, carefully attention has been paid to the folds of the cloth, the piece has a very thick and generous gold mercury gilt surface, there has been some debate if infact this piece was foiled in fine real gold sheet as we see from examples of the 15/16th century tradition, to the base we can see the original base plate is long gone but this gives us a advantage to study the interior and rub over technique the base plate was fixed, the style and interior are exactly what we would see from other examples dating from the 16th century using the lost wax process, good weight 635 grams, the piece is from my personal collection which I purchased many moons ago from a another well respected London art dealer, I hope it goes to a good home, very important spiritual object, very much scholars taste, genuine antique object, superb colour and patina, serious collectors object. Small collection of very good quality items this week.
