Mid 19th century sampler by Maria Jones aged 9 - 1848. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with Maria's details and the date of 1848 running across the top edge with a crown to finish. The biblical quotation - Remember thy creator in the days of thy youth - is stitched beneath followed by two rows of alphabet letters. The middle section of the gauze is stitched from left to right with ...a female figure holding a parasol with a dog and Maria's initials by her side. These are followed by birds, a tree, carnation, bird and male figure. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central floral urn which has a lion standing to its left and right, a crown above them and a floral motif and heart by their side. The topmost blooms of the floral urn have a female figure and tree to their left and a tree, crown and floral motif to their left. The top and bottom edges of the gauze are stitched with two types of floral border whilst the side edges are stitched with two different narrow border patterns. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a few faint stains and the colours of the wool are good with some areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Maria first stitched it.Measures 16 1/4" x 12" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
