L.J. Peretti Large Smooth Oom Paul/ U.S.A./MINT Peretti is the brand of Robert A. Peretti, then owner of the L.J. Peretti Co., a tobacconist founded in Boston by his grandfather, L. Joseph Peretti in 1870. The first pipes made there date from the 1920s, and Robert began producing them in 1938. The customers of this well-known tobacco and pipe shop included the former British prime minister, Ramsey MacDonald, and also Bing Crosby, Basil Rathbone, Edward G. Robinson, and Walter Mat...thau. Presented here is a gorgeous Oom Paul carved from an excellent block of briar and the heel is awash in a sea of birds-eye grain, indicating a sweet & dry smoking instrument. And it boasts a large tobacco chamber 13/16th inches in diameter, over 2 inches deep. For those times when your favorite blends are tasting their best and you do not wish the experience to end. The person who formally enjoyed this pipe took care of it for there is not a nick or scratch on it. Pipe has beautifully unrestricted wide-open draw. Draft hole is dead center flush with the bottom of the bowl. Vulcanite stem is a crisp jet black bearing no marks. Bowl interior is clean and sound. Tenon to mortise union is sound, snug and flush. Pipe does not accept a filter. Pipe weights approximately 2 – 1/4 ounces. Regarding graining, the well-respected authority on the subject, Carl Ehwa, in his landmark book, Pipes & Tobaccos, writes:
“When selecting briar pipes, quality of wood and workmanship and the type of graining are the prime considerations. Pipes made of dense, straight grain wood … have a tendency to absorb moisture much more slowly, which means they will smoke more sweetly and need to be rested less often. The bird's–eye, or end grain at the bottom of the bowl of a straight grain pipe absorbs moisture more quickly than other grains. Yet, because of its position, it allows the moisture to drain away from the tobacco and the channel, thus keeping the smoke dry.” ~ Pg 128Length 6 inches
