Description This is an extremely nice antique A. O. WHITTMORE, Havana, NY Stoneware Fluid JUG, c1870! It was probably used for cider or whiskey. It has a fantastic alkaline salt glaze finish and is in excellent condition. The glazing was high in mineral content which accounts for the variations in color; some can be almost black to lighter shades of brown. This great jug is a beautiful tan color that has some variations of brown and rust. The firing process also cause...d color variations. This jug has a great squat shape, rounded shoulders, and semi-squared spout. It measures approximately 10 ¾” tall and is 7 ½” wide at the base. It is stamped A.O. Whittmore, Havana, NY. Back in the day, pottery was used for utilitarian purposes and therefore was not considered valuable and as such, was not preserved or well cared for so when finding a piece of this quality; it’s a nice find! This jug free from every day cracks and chips. What a great jug this would make for a collector! What a great piece of fantastic stoneware!
