[THE WEST] Of C. M. Russell In " The Happy Family " By B. M. Bower,
Item History & Price
The West has inspired a multitude of popular writers who created stirring tales of villainy and derring-do on the rolling plains and among the buttes and mesas of the Southwest. Few have equaled B.M. Bower, who spins convincing tales of action set in accurately created western plains ranches. Bower launched her career with the novel Chip of the Flying ...U, published in 1904. Chip, a member of the Happy Family on the Flying U, bears a resemblance to the western artist C.M. Russell and it has always been alleged that Chip was based in part on Russell. Charlie Russell and Will James were both close friends with Bower and Russell illustrated some of her early books including Chip of the Flying U. Employing her initials and and last name from her first marriage, Bower was successful for many years in concealing the fact that she was a woman.
These tales are, of course, entirely fictional but the ranch life in which she set her novels is very accurately depicted. Both Russell and Bower depicted the West in which they had lived, Russell in drawings and paintings and Bower in words. Originally published in 1938, The Wind Blows West was Bower's last novel.
