This diary starts the day their plane was shot down.
The first few days are recorded on Camel cigarette packs. This portion of the diaries consists of 2 pages, front and back of green paper and 2 Camel cigarette packs written inside.The remainder is written in a small book supplied by American Red Cross that came in parcel boxes. These b...oxes contained cigarettes, candy, small ready to eat snacks, cards, etc.
The booklet is 45 pages, 41 pages are written both sides. This covers events of camp life for 6 months from 09/25/1944 through 02/06/1945 when they were marched out of Stalag Luft 4.
In Feburary 1945, as the allies came closer and closer to the POW Camps, the Germans gave prisoners 30 minutes to ready to leave the camp.
These diaries were smuggled out of camp when they left. If he had been caught with them the guards would have shot him.
The men were marched 600 miles in 86 days from the Baltic Sea to Berlin, the Shoe Leather Express/Black March, of the 6000 that left the camp that less than 500 per thousand survived the march. This Airman along with two British Airmen, escaped on the night of April 15, 1945.
