from the Secretary of the Navy Gideon Welles on the
matter of iron-clad steamers for navel p...urposes
during war.The first letter, dated March 25, 1862, reads, in part, "...One of these three has been built under a contract with this depart-
ment, and arrived at Hmpton roads in time to be of great service
to the country in driving into port the iron-clad steamer Merrimack,
which was in the possession of the rebels, and had ben them been clad
