'A DAY AT THE ZOO'Illustrated by L. Pritchard and J. Currie.Original Victorian Children's Pop-up BookPublished by Fred.k Warne & Co., London and New York. Measures approx. 8.5" x 8.5" (22cm x 22cm). Undated, but according to Worldcat.org, published in 1891 and authored by the Zoological Society of London. Very similar to Warne's 1890 "Wild Beast Show" which had 5 pop-ups and was much smaller, measuring 11cm x 15 cm.This is a fold-out shape book with m...oveable pop-ups, consisting of 8 lithographed boards depicting movable pictures of Monkeys, Tigers, Lions, Bears (Polar & Brown), Zebras, Rhinoceros, Jaguar, Hippopotamus, a Wolf, Kangeroos, a Dromedary, a Giraffe, an Elephant, and an Aquarium.The front titled board is backed with the Tiger & Lions cage, with the rest following in 'accordian' page fashion.Condition:The main missing elements are the cloth hinges, monkey cage & monkeys, the top half of the Bear & Zebra cage, two and a half 'turrets' and possibly an acetate cover for the aquarium.There is also a little creasing and chipping to the surface & edges here & there, some darkening and dustiness to the boards, and one of the Kangeroo's ears is a little delicate.Pop-ups (7) work fine when gently pulled out. With new cloth hinges and a few facsimile bits, it could be bought back to life.A very rare example. Unusually, we cannot find any other copies currently for sale or records of any having been sold online.
