This is a very beautiful and unusual inside painted snuff bottle. It is from an estate of a client who traveled extensively, so it is not known exactly where she purchased this. Both sides appear to depict the same woman, perhaps at different times of the year.
Inside-painted snuff bottles first came about in the late 1800s and were made up until around 1920 or 1930. The first bottles were actually made to be used for snuff, but later they were made to be appreciated for what t...hey were. They’re actually painted inside with a little brush that goes in and has a right angle so that the paint can go onto the surface. It’s watercolor paint, not oil paint, so you can’t put water in these.
