The quilt weighs just a tad above 3 lbs un-boxed.
The fabrics are either feed sacks or other old cotton swatches. The fabrics that frayed the most are a burgundy one (pic # 8) and the dark yellow, thicker cotton that you se...e on pic # 9.
The signature consist in 2 embroidered letters, visible on pics # 1 from a distance and pic # 2 at closer range. To us, it seems as the letter S twice, but please check and judge by yourself. There is no other thing on the quilt that we can use to identify the maker or where and when it was made.
We are calling this Gee's Bend style for obvious reasons, as it disregards the "classic" geometrical perfection of "traditional" quilts, but we can't say if this has anything to do with Gee's Bend or even if it was made by African-American quilters. The only thing we can say is that it "looks", maybe just a little bit, as those amazing Gee's Bend quilts we have seen in books.
The piecing and quilting were done by hand. There is a lot of piecing here, as each column of triangles has approximately 105 of them, and there are 10 full columns or vertical rows of triangles, plus one that is not complete.
Everything in the quilt is kind of rustic: the stitching of the triangles, the quilting, the way it was put together, slightly off-shape, etc.
We were not able to find this exact pattern anywhere in our books. It could be Wild Goose Chase, but the 'geese' heads are pointing across, so we decided against the name There are some "pine trees" pattern that might look similar, but again the trees are not pointing right.
But it certainly looks as bands with "teeth", as in an endless saw, or bandsaw, so we went for it.
