Comic Kawanabe Kyosai woodblock print from the Meiji era. The subject comes from Yoshida Kenko's Tsurezuregusa (Leaves of Idleness). A drunken priest, wanting to show off, places a heavy metal pot over his head and starts dancing with it on. He breaks everyone at the party up, but the laughter stops when they realize he can't take it off. Various things are tried, and eventually a doctor manages to remove it, but not without serious damage to his nose and ears.&...nbsp; Kyosai chooses to focus on the happy moment when the priest is dancing like a fool, with a distinctly Edo type figure in the foreground laughing. Lively print, full of wonderful touches. Check out the praying mantis design on the priest's fan!
4 3/4 by 7 inch print, signed Shosho Kyosai. The paper is a bit darkened, and there are two nicks on the top, but this is a guaranteed original work by this important Meiji artist.
