Selmer Mark VI Soprano - RARE - Shape/Unengraved/to High - F W/ S80 Piece (E)
Item History & Price
This incredible Selmer Mark VI soprano is a rare gem. Beyond it being an absolutely incredible player, the horn is in about as good of condition as I've ever seen a Mark VI. Some of the very unique aspects of this horn are that it is unengraved and only goes to high-F, which Selmer made very few of in their Mark VI line of sopranos. Fabricated to the best of my research in 1977, this horn ...came to me from the original owner, who played it very seldom over the 42 years he's had it.
The horn is a real player! She sings from low Bb way up into the altissimo registers with ease. The intonation on this particular horn is very good too, and has that classic and incredible Mark VI tone and color that is so sought after by professionals. Rich, brilliant, subtile and warm, the sound of this horn is extraordinary.
The pads, corks, felts and springs are in like-new condition and the horn is very well regulated for professional playing. There are a couple of very minor pings towards the lower rear section of the horn, between the lower thumb rest and bell. The only lacquer wear on the horn is around the bottom edge of the bell, and very minor at that. The neck cork is in great condition and the horn makes that wonder "pop" sound as your run your fingers down the keys, indicating a perfect seal on all the pads. The original Selmer hard-case is in near perfect condition too. There is no logo-plate on this case, which could be due to the period this horn was produced.
As many know, the Mark VI line of Selmer horns was phased out in the early-1970s and replaced with the not-so-great Mark VII series in their alto and tenor lines. The sopranos and baritones however were never made as Mark VIIs, so though this horn was from the Mark VII period, it's still got all the glory and immaculate hand-made fervor of the Mark VI series.
Horn comes with a Selmer Paris S80 (E facing) mouthpiece, Selmer ligature and metal cap. The mouthpiece is in near perfect condition, save the surface scratch on one side of the barrel. The tip, rails, table and bite-plate are all pristine.
I am an endorsed artist with Selmer Paris & Conn-Selmer, as well as Oleg Products and Theo Wanne. I have owned and played hundreds of Selmer Mark VIs over my carrier and lifetime, and this is an exceptional specimen of a horn. Many people prefer the unegraved horns, which were rare during the Mark VI period, as the engraving causes lacquer wear around it and some feel also impact the sound or resonance of the horn. Also that this horn doesn't have a high-F# key is also rare and an advantage to many, as the current trend in horn manufacturing is going back to no high-F# due to harmonic and resonance factors that the additional tone-hole so near the tenon create. All-in-all this is a very special and rare horn.
If you are interested I can offer the buyer of this horn discounted pricing on a BAM France case &/or Theo Wanne mouthpiece of your choice. I am a dealer for both.
