Offered here for your consideration is a very fine, antique Italian Maiolica bust of a Renaissance Page or Youth. Made in the Angelo Minghetti factory in Bologna, Italy in the late 19th or early 20th century.
Angelo Minghetti started producing ceramics at Imola in 1848. He started his first furnace in Bologna in 1858 and he built another at Malvasia in 1864. From 1877 all works were concentrated in Bologna. His works were much praised at the time and often mistaken f...or 'antique' (Renaissance) Maiolica. Minghetti drew inspiration from his 'heroes' of the Renaissance period, most notably the sculptor Lucca della Robbia, who was famous for his large-scale works in polychrome earthenware. (From the V&A museum's website entry for: Bust of Emperor Domitian, in enameled terracotta, probably by Angelo Minghetti (1821/30 - 1885), after 1849). Minghetti's work is often compared to the works of Cantagalli faience or Majolica.
Provenance: From the estate of the prominent Lucas family of Baltimore.
The bust is in overall good, as-pictured used estate condition with some highpoint and edge wear, some glaze flakes and shallow chips here and there, fritting to the foot, some very fine and light surface scratches throughout, and other signs of light wear consistent with age
