Tippco 42cm clockwork R100 airship. 42cm long. Motor works. The light worked when tested for a very short time with a 6volt battery (the voltage should be less). Generally in good condition. there is rust around the battery compartment which is partially hidden when the compartment is closed. I think the rust near the front was probably caused when somebody left the battery in.This toy is interesting in that the R200 never had RAF markings on it. Perhaps it was anticipated by Tippco t...hat it would. The premature demise of the R200 and the fact that it never had RAF marks strongly suggests that this toy only had a short production run and as a consequence is very rare. Still - it displays well from the important aspects. It has a box lid with a label that describes it as a Mechanical airship - Made in Germany. I guess there was never a picture on the lid as it never appeared in this RAF guise. Nice to have a working toy of the airship that never was. Perhaps sad from a historical point of view. This toy is interesting in that the British made, R100 never had RAF markings on it - as it does here. Perhaps it was anticipated by Tippco that it would be made for the RAF because it was being made by Vickers, an armament company . The premature demise of the R100 - which first flew in 1929 and was scrapped in 1930 -and the fact that it never had RAF markings strongly suggests that this toy only had a short production run and as a consequence is very rare - it also suggests that it dates about 1929-30 making it about 90 years old. ..the litho printing of the airship engines as compared to the later Tippco models with metal engines suggests the model was produced in a hurry, perhaps cutting costs, given the failure of the R100 and its consequent short production run.. Still - it displays well from the important aspects. It has a box lid with a label that describes it as a Mechanical airship - Made in Germany. I guess there was never a picture on the lid as it never appeared in this RAF guise. Nice to have a working toy of the airship that never was. - This is the nearest that the RAF ever got to it. Perhaps sad from a historical point of view - especially as the toy is German and also it is the nearest one will get to a contemporary memento of the R100. Images sell!
