This is an antique lidded tansu box made of Japanese kiri (paulownia) wood in the early Taisho era (c. 1915). It was specially constructed to store a shamisen (Japanese 3 string instrument). It is precisely fitted with a lid that fits nicely on the top. The lidded top has a finger cutout to aid in removing the lid (see pictures 5 & 6). It has one small drawer on the bottom to store strings or plectrum for shamisen (see pictures 8 & 9). The top ...is trimmed in a dark rosewood (see picture 4). It is constructed in the ancient craft using only wooden pins and dovetailed sides (see last picture). Having been used lovingly for over a century, along with a warm glowing patina, it still remains in very fine condition. It measures 10 1/4" by 9 3/4 " by 14 1/4" tall ( 26 x 25 x 36 cm).
