This is an antique lidded tansu box made of Japanese sugi (cryptomeria) wood in the mid Meiji era (c. 1885). It is precisely fitted with a lid that fits nicely on the top (see picture s 2 & 10) This is box is called Zenibako (box for money) because there is a secret drawer to store valuables (see pictures 3, 4 & 5). There is Japanese writing on the back of lid (see pictures 7 & 8). Having been used lovingly for over a century, along wit...h a warm glowing patina, it still remains in fine condition. It measures 16 1/2" long by 8 1/2 "wide by 10" tall ( 42 x 21.5 x 25.5 cm).
