ANTIQUE 19thC Japanese IMARI Ribbed Porcelain Ginger Jar / Vase MEIJI Period Click images to enlarge Description This auction is for a most attractive large antique Japanese porcelain jar with ribbed body and two lids (one inner).
The jar is beautifully hand painted in typical Imari colours of Iron Red, Cobalt Blue & Gold. The main cartouche has a design of Japanese house and garden and the other two are profusely decorated with Chrysanthemum type flowers.
This type of ware was traditionally made around Arita in the former Hizen Province, North Western Kyushu, Japan. It dates from the mid to late 19th century Meiji period (1868-1912).
There are iron red artists marks/characters on each of the pieces.
The main jar is in very good antique condition with just a couple of tiny nibbles to inner rim. Under close inspection, the lid has a small repair to the side. The inner lid is retained but has been broken and reglued, please see detailed photos.
The jar measures 7 5/8 inches (19.25 cm) high and weighs over 1 kilo, unwrapped.
