Enamaled on black glass in the style that became known as Mary Gregory, these two figures could be two young philosophers discussing science or world affairs, or they could be children garbed as adults strolling in a garden. The piece is worn, with chips on each of the four corners, fading gold painted edge trim and slight wear to the enamel decoration. Even with these expected signs of age it is charming to look at. On the underside is taped a yellowed paper with a n...ote from a previous owner saying "This is a Mary Gregory piece - between 1820 - 40. Belonged to my father's Grandfather- Joseph Bacon." I purchased it years ago from a San Francisco estate sale of an older woman. The concept of "Mary Gregory" did not exist in that time frame, indicating that not all family stories are accurate. However, the piece is certainly quite old and appealing. About 4 1/2 inches by 2 3/4.
